SUPPORT HOSIERY TERMS

COMPRESSION HOSIERY
A generic term for most support hosiery. There are cheaper brands that sell so called support hose but they have minimal compression. Make sure there is at least 8mmHg compression.

SURGICAL HOSIERY
Usually refers to 30-40 mmHg, but can also be used to mean the thick looking, heavy knit support hose.

mmHg (millimeters of mercury)
Important to know about. This refers to the measure of compression. In general:
8-15mmHg: Very light compression. Used to treat slightly tired & uncomfortable legs.
15-20mmHg: Usually good for most people with first occurrences of varicose veins. Also as a preventive DVT measure.
20-30mmHg: Recommended for pregnant women, moderate varicose vein problems, and mildly swollen legs. It’s best to consult with a doctor before using these.
30-40mmHg: If you think you need these, you must see a doctor first. You might need more than surgical stockings.
